NEWS

July-August 2010

This website has been going for six years.  I've always maintained it, but now the Novelists have decided to set up their own website, it seems a good time for me to hand over the whole thing to someone else. Since none of you ever read this, I won't bother with sentimental farewells.

We receive emails from all sorts of people asking us to publicise their books, classes, poetry events, residential courses, web design services and organic dancing shoes.  I did create a Links page some time ago (see panel on left) but it took a lot of time and not one person had ever commented on it.  Without any evidence that it is wanted - or even used - I have stopped updating it.  Frankly, I think if you are looking for any of these services, you probably already have your favourite websites or search engines - am I right?  I don't see it as my job to spend huge amounts of time publicising complete strangers on our website, and unless I receive an avalanche of objections, I'm going to stop.  What do you think?

We lost two good writers and friends this year, Phil Poole and John Rety - here is a link to Phil's obituary in the Camden New Journal, to which he was a contributor.  There will doubtless be an obituary for John in the Morning Star very soon, but meanwhile here's Rob Ray's blog from February 4th, remembering John.

I've created a Facebook Group for Word for Word, and can put anouncements on that at any time.  It's a closed group, but if you are on Facebook, you can apply to join it and keep in touch with what's going on, make comments, suggestions, join discussions, post photos, videos, etc. Look for Daisy Solomons (that's me!)

You webmistress had

the honour of an hour on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square on 9th July, as part of Antony Gormley's One and Other project.  It was a wonderful experience, but with only 24 hours notice I wasn't able to do much.

you have to sit through the first few minutes of the man reading from the bible.   He refused to budge, left me (literally) mid air and stole several of my minutes.   Typical preacher.

and to see the photo in the Mail on Sunday (hisssss) go to

The Torriano at 99 Torriano Avenue, NW5 2SG tel: 020 7267 4305 has offered Word for Word a poetry slot some time in the future (4-6 readers) - if anyone wants to organise that, contact Brian or Viv. The threatened Torriano Meeting House provides a venue for poetry and the arts and should not be run as a shop, says Phil Poole.  Read his recent article in the Camden New Journal here
